ANNOUNCING COLOR 64 NETWORK! Allow your Color 64 BBS to network between other Color 64 BBS's around the country or around the block. Here's how the system works.... The system consists mainly of two main add-on modules, a network setup program, all the necessary merge files to convert your existing modules, all booter and auto-boot loaders for the 1700, 1750 and 1764 ram expansion cartridges, several network utilities and easy step by step documentation to help along the way. You decide which BBS's you would like to include in your system. There is NO central node. If you would like to be able to communicate with say the "ABC BBS" and perhaps the "XYZ BBS", all you'll need to do, is set those two BBS's with your network setup file. Then a user will be able to either send E-Mail or a public message to any of these boards. You can select a maximum of 200 boards! Sending is done in an extremely efficient manner. You have several options you can choose. You can set the network so that messages will be stored on your disk until you have a sufficient amount to warrant a "send". To insure that it's not going to take too long, you can also select how many days you would like to wait before the messages are sent regardless of the quantity. Sending can be done anytime you like. The "receiver" will accept a node any time. You must select a "window" in which all calls will go out. If there is anything due to go out that day, calls will be attempted only within these hours which you select. Your BBS will NOT be down during this "open" window time. It will accept normal calls just as it always does. After 5 minutes of inactivity (no calls), THEN the network will take over, and auto-dial EACH node that is due to go out. It will auto-dial just once per node. If a connection is not made, control is returned to the normal BBS and then after another 5 minutes of inactivity it will repeat the procedure until either the window closes or it makes the connection. Amazingly as it may seem, in the testing stages between two very busy BBS's, we have yet to fail to make a connection on any day that messages were due to go out! Messages for each node are combined into a "packet" to make the transferring much more efficient rather than sending one after another. After the receiver gets the packet, the two disconnect and the packet is disassembled and all messages are sent to their proper destination. Any messages that are undeliverable (i.e. A user is deleted at the same time a message was sent to him/her), will be delivered to YOUR mailbox so that you may decide what you want to do with it. The system is almost 100% self-operational. There is very little maintenance to perform. There is a complete billing system included with the network for those that want to charge for this service. EACH individual node is allowed its own charge. You set two variables. The charge for the first 1000 bytes, and the charge for each additional 100 bytes. This closely reflects the way your telephone billing is done, so you can more or less set up the charges to reflect closely to your actual costs. Since 1000 bytes alone will take less than 1 minute to send at 1200 baud, this is a great way to keep the costs in line. Remember, you don't HAVE to charge anything if you don't want to. All the billing data is stored on a small relative file. Great pains were taken to make sure that under almost any circumstances this data would not become lost. The relative file is backed up at midnight each night, and a separate disk based log is maintained with all network transactions in it. Unless your house burns down, or a giant magnet crashes through your roof onto your drive(s), you are pretty much safe with these backup systems. There is also a full featured editor for editing the main billing file. Currently the system supports only Punter protocol. If there is a need, X-Modem may be added as an update. This also means that the network will not work with PC Pursuit. If I get enough feedback about this, I will surely attempt to include it in a future update. The system will work with any drive that currently works on Color 64 BBS. The network requires very little memory. In fact most on-line games require more memory than this network does! Baud rates of 300, 1200 & 2400 are possible. Now for the bad news (maybe). Due to the fact that in order for this whole system to work as efficiently as possible, it is REQUIRED that you have any of the three ram expansion cartridges (1700, 1750 or 1764). If you don't have one, you should consider getting one anyway. Running this BBS without one is like driving a car with no air in the tires (in my opinion). When outgoing messages are sent, the sender can also pick up a specially made membership list at the same time. This list will include all users on that BBS which have the capability to post messages. It is regenerated each night at midnight to provide a fresh new listing. Since you may not want to have to receive this file every time you have messages to send out, you can specify the number of days you would like to wait before the network will request a new one. Network messages can be auto-replied to PROVIDED that the node which sent the mail is set up on your system as an outgoing node. In other words, it is possible that someone wanted to include you in their network while you, for some reason, did not want the ability to be able to send to them. In that case obviously an auto-reply is impossible. Any public messages that come into your system can be dealt with in one of two ways. You can define in the network setup program to which category you would like the message to go. Then when you receive these messages, and they are disassembled, the network will automatically insert them properly into the public message base in the category you chose. The second choice is to hold all incoming public messages for previewing. There is a built-in feature that allows you (or a co-sysop) to view each public message, and decide whether you want to HOLD, DELETE or RELEASE it into the public message bases. This way you can screen any objectionable material before anyone sees it. That's about it. There are many other handy options and features to make running the network as enjoyable and efficient as possible. Color 64 Network is copyrighted with permission from Greg Pfountz, author of Color 64 BBS. The selling price is only $15 with all future updates free. As of this writing, the software testing is almost complete. Delivery is expected in early to mid November, however delays are sometimes inevitable. Please keep this in mind. If you have any further questions, please feel free to write, or call my BBS. Also note that although Greg Pfountz has helped me along tremendously, I'm sure he would appreciate it by not being bothered with questions regarding Color 64 Network. I'm sure he has his hands full! 2118 Emerson St. TERRAPIN TRANSIT Berkeley, CA 94705 415-486-1160 Please include your BBS name, number, hours of operation, and any special features so that we can put together a national listing of networks.
